Finally, the day has arrived. Naan Kadavul, Bala’s most eagerly-awaited film starring Arya and Pooja, will release on Friday, February 6th.
Director Bala has always made films completely different from mainstream cinema. Usually, directors who make such films find it hard to become public favourites. But Bala’s case is different; he is clearly a favourite of every Tamil film lover – urban or rural.
The human mind has always fascinated Bala. With a keen eye, the director always followed the myriad ways people react to situations: in Nandha, he spoke about the influence of domestic problems on a child; in Sethu, he pointed out society’s reactions to lovers belonging to different castes; and in Pithamagan, his best so far, he focused on a man raised in a crematorium, devoid of social contacts and his resulting reactions to friendship and love.
With his penchant to present the unimaginable, Bala now brings Naan Kadavul, in which he tells the story of a boy who grows up amidst aghori sadhus, an unfathomable group of people calling themselves God and practicing necro-cannibalism. With Arya as the protagonist, he explores many ideas in Naan Kadavul. He invites you to look at the world from the perspective of sadhus and differently-abled, and when your perspective shifts, you suddenly begin to appreciate their insights, chuckling at yourself and society. But the film is not so greatly philosophical as to cloy on you. It is also pure entertainment with comedy, good music (by Ilayaraja), and spectacular stunts.
In every Bala film, the protagonist is the main highlight; the entire attention of the audience is riveted on him throughout the movie, for Bala brings out an actor’s best performance. He has done it with Suriya and Vikram; now, in Naan Kadavul, he does it with Arya. People who eagerly come to Bala’s films to see some real acting from his lead actor will be highly appreciative of Arya’s performance. Pooja, who plays a vital role, has also delivered her best performance.
With perfect support from Ilayaraja’s music, Arya and Pooja’s acting, Naan Kadavul is a delight to watch. Naan Kadavul is yet another masterpiece from Bala and a milestone in World Cinema. Do not miss the marvel titled Naan Kadavul.
