The Presidential election for Tamil Film Directors’ Association is under way at South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, Anna Salai. Polling started at 9:00 a.m. and will continue till 5:00 p.m. The president and 21 office bearers will be elected today.
Persons in the cine field may recall that this election was to be held in May 2008 when president S.A. Chandrasekhar’s tenure ended. But it was put off due to factional violence; a group of assistant directors claimed that most of their grievances were not addressed at all and preferred to propose their own representatives. The situation only worsened with the group of senior directors deciding to give the presidency to Bharathi Raja, a decision which was challenged in the court by R.C. Shakthi, the other candidate. After the court invalidated appointing Bharathi Raja as president and ordered the association to give equal chance to all representatives, a reconciliatory meeting ensued where it was decided that an election which giving equal opportunity to all representatives would be held in November/ December. The announcement was welcomed by the group of assistant directors, who call themselves “Directors of Tomorrow”. Now, the representatives of this group – Jeeva R., Ravi M.C., Harirajan, Muthuvadugu and K. Thirumavalavan – will contest for the posts of vice president, secretary, and EC members. With preponderance in number, this faction provides stiff competition to others in this category.
While Bharathi Raja and R.C. Shakthi contest for president’s post, Pughazhenthi and R.K. Selvamani contest for the post of secretary.
